Motorists across the UK are being warned about a little-known Highway Code rule that could result in a hefty fine, based solely on the direction their car is parked overnight.
The Highway Code states that parking against the flow of traffic in the dark is illegal and can lead to a fine of up to £1000, unless in a designated parking bay. The rule exists for visibility reasons: headlamps are designed to reflect off the rear of a vehicle, not the front. When a car is parked incorrectly, it becomes harder to spot, increasing the risk of an accident.
Expert warning
Ian Lowe, road safety specialist at GM Direct Hire, said: "Most drivers don't think twice about which way they leave their car, but the Highway Code is clear: parking the wrong way at night is a safety hazard."
He added: "Headlights don't illuminate the front of a parked car, which means it becomes almost invisible to oncoming traffic. It's a simple oversight that could cost lives - and land you with a fine."
Other parking rules to know
While the "wrong way" parking rule catches many drivers off guard, Lowe warned that it is just one of several common mistakes that could result in a financial penalty. Here are eight other little-known UK parking rules that could land you a fine:
- Parking too close to a junction (Penalty charge notice - usually £70) - You must not park within 10 metres of a junction, unless in an authorised space.
- Parking on the pavement (£70+ fine) - In some parts of the UK like London it's completely banned but elsewhere it can still be fined if it causes obstruction.
- Parking on zig-zag lines near pedestrian crossings (up to £100 fine and 3 points) - Absolutely prohibited, these areas must be kept clear for safety.
- Parking in cycle lanes (£70+ fine) - Stopping or parking in cycle lanes marked by solid white lines is an offence.
- Parking in front of a driveway (PCN or towing) - Even if it's your neighbour's, it's classed as obstruction.
- Leaving your car engine running while parked (£20-£40 fine) - Illegal if stationary on a public road, unless in traffic.
- Parking in a disabled bay without a blue badge (£70+ fine) - Restricted for badge holders only.
- Double yellow lines (£70+ fine) - No waiting at any time unless clearly signed otherwise.
