An underground cable fault in Hebburn has caused power cuts affecting 847 properties, with Northern Powergrid working to restore supplies. The fault, which occurred in the NE31 1 postcode area, also caused blackouts in nearby Jarrow and other parts of South Tyneside.
Businesses and Emergency Services Respond
Local shops including Asda, Aldi, and the Post Office were forced to close temporarily due to the power loss. Northumbria Police attended the scene to support residents and erect cordons as needed, with officers spotted near Hebburn Bridge and the Metro station. Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service also responded to a reported incident at 14:25, but it was declared a false alarm and crews left by 15:02.

In a statement issued around 3:15pm, a Northern Powergrid spokesperson said: "We are currently dealing with an underground cable fault in the NE31 1 postcode area of Hebburn. The high voltage fault has caused a power cut affecting 847 customers." The company estimated that customers would be restored between 3:30pm and 4:30pm on 13 July, though this was an initial estimate pending engineer assessment. Engineers were travelling to the site to switch the network and restore power in phases.
