Heathrow Airport Reports Record February Passenger Traffic
Heathrow Airport has announced its busiest February on record, with a significant 5.8 million passengers travelling through its four terminals last month. This figure represents a notable increase of 110,000 passengers compared to the same period last year, marking a 1.9% growth in traffic.
Drivers of the Passenger Surge
The west London airport attributed this surge to a combination of factors, including a bumper half-term holiday period and increased travel associated with Chinese New Year celebrations. Heathrow officials noted that the rise was primarily driven by airlines operating larger and fuller aircraft, maximising capacity during peak travel times.
Capacity Constraints and Competitive Concerns
Despite the record numbers, Heathrow expressed serious concerns about its infrastructure and competitive position. The airport warned that its two runways are now full, limiting further growth. More alarmingly, Heathrow revealed that its growth rate of 1.9% is trailing the European average of 4.6%, resulting in the loss of its status as the continent's busiest airport to Istanbul.
Heathrow chief executive Thomas Woldbye commented on the situation, stating, "Every day during February, Heathrow continued to provide excellent service whilst passenger numbers climbed to new heights. Our passengers are at the heart of everything we do."
Infrastructure Plans and Operational Challenges
To address these challenges, Heathrow emphasised its commitment to building a third runway, which it believes will ensure the country gets the infrastructure it needs to stay competitive in the global aviation market. The airport is actively working with airlines and other airports to facilitate additional flight requests, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
