Roadworks are underway on major A roads across nearly every district in Greater Manchester, with the exception of Manchester and Rochdale. Some motorists are being warned to expect delays for up to 18 months, according to the latest data from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).
Reasons for Roadworks and Impact on Travel
Street works can be carried out for a variety of reasons, including road modifications, emergency repairs, and utility company projects. However, a 2025 parliamentary transport committee report highlighted the negative consequences: "They can also be a source of frustration for anyone trying to get around on roads and pavements by causing congestion and delays that harm the economy, disrupt transport services and limit access to high streets and businesses."
