The Great North Run is set to welcome its highest ever number of runners on Sunday morning, with a record 63,000 people lining up at the Newcastle start line. More than 200,000 spectators are expected to line the 13.1-mile route from Newcastle to South Shields.
Weekend of events and road closures
The world-famous race marks the grand finale to a weekend of sport, which also includes the Great North 5k on Friday and the mini and junior runs on Saturday. All three days will involve road closures, with those around the quayside for Friday and Saturday already confirmed.
For the main event, the usual route taking runners from the Tyne Bridge into Gateshead will be unchanged, despite ongoing demolition work on the Gateshead flyover. Families and friends of runners will be able to share personal messages to appear on a big screen en route, timed for the moment their loved one runs past.
