Ryanair and Jet2 Issue Flight Delay Warnings as More Snow Forecast for UK
Flight Delays Warning as More Snow Forecast for UK

Passengers planning to fly this weekend are being warned to expect significant disruption as two of the UK's largest airlines issue alerts over worsening weather conditions. Ryanair and Jet2 have both cautioned that further flight delays and cancellations are likely as the Met Office extends severe weather warnings for snow, wind, rain, and ice across the country.

Met Office Issues Fresh Amber Alert for Snow

The national forecaster has escalated its warnings, placing an amber alert for snow in parts of Scotland alongside additional warnings for rain, wind, and ice, primarily impacting northern regions. These alerts are active from today, Saturday 10 January 2026, through to Monday.

This follows a week of travel chaos brought by Storm Goretti, which delivered several inches of snow and gusts of up to 99mph, grounding flights at multiple airports. The Met Office now warns that up to 30cm (12 inches) of snow could fall in some areas, particularly the Scottish Highlands, on Sunday.

Airlines Brace for Further Disruption

In response to the deteriorating forecast, airlines are taking proactive steps. Jet2 has stated that while it plans to operate as close to schedule as possible, passengers should be prepared for potential disruption. The airline's operations teams are monitoring conditions closely.

"We will, where possible, board all flights for an on-time departure," a Jet2 spokesperson advised. "However, please be prepared for a longer than normal wait either in the terminal or onboard the aircraft to depart." The airline has apologised in advance and urged travellers to check in as scheduled, promising to contact them directly if their flight is affected.

Similarly, Ryanair has issued a specific warning about potential disruption to and from the UK on Saturday 10 January due to necessary de-icing procedures. The budget carrier is encouraging all passengers to monitor the Ryanair app for live updates and said affected customers will be notified.

European Travel Also Hit by Winter Weather

The travel impact is not confined to the UK. Storm Goretti has also brought heavy snow and strong winds to mainland Europe, affecting France and Germany. The situation has been particularly severe at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, which has cancelled more than 3,200 flights since 2 January due to persistent snowy conditions in the Netherlands.

Schiphol Airport warned that due to the ongoing winter weather, flights may again be delayed this weekend. The airport is also contending with a reduced train schedule to and from the terminal due to railway works and the adjusted NS timetable.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Rebekah Hicks highlighted the risks, stating: "Snow will turn to rain through the day, with the possibility of freezing rain for a time which could lead to some extremely hazardous conditions with ice forming instantly on all surfaces. With heavy rain and snow melt as temperatures climb, there is a risk of flooding in some areas too."

With multiple severe weather warnings active, authorities are urging the public to stay informed via the latest forecasts and official updates from local responders.
