Five workers have died after a railway bridge under construction collapsed in eastern China on Monday, according to state media. The incident occurred at 5.46pm at a construction site in Yancheng, Jiangsu province, when a 95-metre section of the Yuegang Bridge gave way without warning.
The bridge is part of the Lianyungang–Shanghai railway line, a high-speed rail project being built by China Railway 12th Bureau Group Co, Ltd, a subsidiary of state-owned China Railway Construction Corporation. Local authorities said emergency services were dispatched immediately after the collapse.
Two workers were pulled from the wreckage but later died from their injuries. A search for three others continued overnight and concluded on Tuesday morning, bringing the confirmed death toll to five. Rescue operations at the scene are now complete, state media reported.
An investigation into the cause of the collapse has been launched, though no findings have been released. The accident follows other fatal incidents on Chinese infrastructure projects, including a December 2024 collapse at a railway construction site in Guangdong that killed 13, and a test train collision in Kunming last November that claimed 11 lives.
