Firefighters are battling a blaze in the car park of a Tesco superstore in Glasgow after a car caught fire, sending thick black smoke pouring from underneath the building and forcing shoppers to flee.
Crews called to Maryhill Road
Emergency crews, including two Scottish Fire and Rescue Service appliances, were sent to the supermarket on Maryhill Road in the north-west of the city on the afternoon of Friday, August 21. The alarm was raised at around 4.21pm following reports of a car on fire, believed to be in the parking lot situated beneath the building.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known, and fire crews remain at the scene.
Shoppers flee as smoke fills the area
Videos from outside the superstore show shoppers fleeing from the car park as dense, dark smoke spills out from under the building. Plumes of smoke have filled the area surrounding the Tesco branch and across the road, with sirens from fire engines audible from several streets away.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 4.21pm to reports of a car on fire at the Tesco supermarket on Maryhill Road in Glasgow. We mobilised two appliances and are still at the scene." Police Scotland and Tesco have been approached for comment.
