Europe's Most Expensive Toll Roads: £60 One-Way Fee Revealed
Europe's Most Expensive Toll Roads: £60 One-Way Fee

More than 8 million Britons are expected to drive to their European holiday destinations this year, according to UK government data. However, research by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) reveals that fewer than half (41%) of travellers take their own driver's license when driving abroad. To help drivers plan ahead, Northgate Vehicle Hire has identified Europe's most expensive toll roads for summer 2026.

Most Expensive Toll Road: A6/A7 Paris to Marseille

The A6/A7 route from Paris to Marseille is the most expensive toll road in Europe, costing drivers £60.50 for a one-way trip. This means a return journey would set tourists back more than £120 in tolls alone. The route connects Paris to the Mediterranean, attracting high tourist traffic year-round.

Spencer Davi, sales and marketing director at Northgate Vehicle Hire, said: “Toll charges are a real consideration, especially for those making regular cross-border trips. What surprised us most about this research is how much variation there is across the roads.”

Second Most Expensive: Øresund Bridge

The Øresund Bridge, linking Denmark and Sweden, is the second most expensive toll road at £54.12 per crossing. The bridge saw eight million passages in 2025 and experiences significant tourist traffic during summer, particularly on Friday and Sunday evenings.

Italy's Autostrada A1: Milan to Naples

Italy remains a top destination for British holidaymakers, according to YouGov's Travel Trends 2026 report. However, the Autostrada A1 from Milan to Naples costs drivers £49.94. This is Italy's longest motorway, known as the country's 'spinal cord', and drastically reduces driving times between the two cities.

Greece's A1: Athens to Thessaloniki

Greece is a popular summer destination, but drivers should be mindful of toll costs. The A1 from Athens to Thessaloniki ranks fourth on the list at £33.54 per one-way trip.

Cheapest Toll Roads in Europe

At the other end of the scale, the Demir Kapija to Gevgelija route in North Macedonia is the cheapest toll road in Europe, costing just £1.43. Other affordable options include Bosnia and Herzegovina's A1: Sarajevo to Zenica (£2.85), Germany's Warnow Tunnel (£3.51), Albania's A1 Rruge e Kombit (£4.39), and Serbia's E-75: Beograd to Niš (£5.46).
