England's World Cup last-32 match against DR Congo kicks off at 5pm UK time on Wednesday, a timing that allows schoolchildren to watch after school. This contrasts with earlier group-stage games, which started at 9pm or 10pm on school nights.
School Children Excited for Teatime Kick-off
Chris Spratt, headteacher at Loudwater Combined School in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, said his pupils, aged four to 11, are eagerly anticipating the game. "The children are really, really excited about the game and about the World Cup in general," he said.
The school has integrated the tournament into lessons, focusing on different global regions and hosting special visitors, including someone present at England's 1966 World Cup final victory. Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha was also used as an example of self-belief in an assembly.
Some pupils have asked to wear England kit to school on Wednesday. Spratt responded, "I've said we will leave that until we reach the final," but admitted he is "easily persuaded" if England progress to the quarter-finals or semi-finals.
Workers Face Challenges with 5pm Start
While the 5pm kick-off is ideal for schoolchildren, many workers may struggle to finish on time. Experts predict some will leave work early or stream the match discreetly at their desks or on their commute.
Discount website Vouchercodes forecasts that 3.5 million people will watch the match in pubs and bars, while 11.2 million will watch from home. Fans are expected to spend £276.3 million in shops, with £157.1 million on snacks and drinks, and £64.8 million in the hospitality sector from post-work pub visits.
