EasyJet Flight Forced to Abort Landing at Paris-Orly After Wedding Fireworks Incident
An EasyJet aircraft was compelled to execute an emergency abort of its landing at Paris-Orly Airport on Sunday afternoon, following a startling discovery by the pilot moments before touchdown. The disruption occurred when a wedding procession ignited fireworks perilously close to the airport's runway, creating a hazardous situation that demanded immediate action.
Pilot's Quick Thinking Prevents Potential Disaster
At approximately 5:40 PM on April 5, the captain of EasyJet flight EJU4874, arriving from Venice, observed small explosions and smoke near the ground, adjacent to the threshold of runway 3, also designated as runway 25. The source was identified as several individuals launching fireworks from the intersection of Rue Lamartine and Rue du 8-Mai-1945 in Villeneuve-le-Roi, close to warehouses owned by the Staf transport company.
Reacting with precision, the pilot initiated a go-around procedure, powering up the engines, climbing sharply, and steering the aircraft away from the danger zone. The plane then circled over surrounding areas before making a subsequent landing attempt. This swift response ensured the safety of all passengers and crew on board, with no injuries reported.
Airport Operations Thrown into Disarray
Inside the control tower, emergency protocols were immediately activated. Runway 3 was shut down as a precautionary measure, remaining closed until 7:00 PM, according to confirmed sources. With limited alternatives available, air traffic controllers redirected the flight to runway 4, where it landed without further incident, as stated by the prosecutor's office.
Armed officers were dispatched to investigate the source of the explosions, later determining that the mortar fire originated from a wedding procession involving approximately fifteen vehicles. The prosecutor's office noted that a sedan and several individuals firing mortars into the air were involved, though no arrests have been made at this time.
Airline Emphasizes Safety and Training
An EasyJet spokesperson addressed the incident, stating, 'easyJet can confirm that the captain of flight EJU4874 from Venice to Paris Orly on 5 April elected to perform a routine go-around on arrival into Orly due to perceived fireworks in the vicinity of the runway.' The spokesperson further emphasized, 'easyJet's pilots are highly trained to perform go-arounds as a precaution and in line with our procedures. The flight landed normally, and at no point was the safety of the passengers onboard compromised. The safety and well-being of its passengers and crew is always easyJet's highest priority.'
This event highlights the critical importance of aviation safety protocols and the potential risks posed by unauthorized activities near airport runways. The disruption caused by the wedding procession's fireworks serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in airport security and operational procedures.
