DVLA Urges Drivers Over 70 to Renew Licences Online for Free

Motorists aged 70 and over are being urged to renew their driving licences online, as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) highlights the importance of staying compliant with licence renewal rules. Unlike younger drivers who renew every ten years, those aged 70 and above must renew their licence every three years. The process is free of charge and can be completed quickly via the official government website.

DVLA Reminder on Social Media

In a recent post on the social media platform X, the DVLA encouraged eligible drivers to take action promptly. The message read: "Are you 70 or over and due to renew your driving licence? Do it for free! Grab a cuppa and renew today at http://gov.uk/renewat70. It's easy, quick and secure on GOV.UK."

Online Renewal Process

If you are 70 or over, or will turn 70 within the next 90 days, you can renew your driving licence online at no cost. Applications submitted online typically result in the new licence arriving within one week. To use this service, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Your British licence has expired or is due to expire within 90 days
  • You are a resident of Great Britain (a separate service exists for Northern Ireland)
  • You meet the minimum eyesight requirement
  • You are not disqualified from driving for any reason

Additionally, you can update your licence photograph during the renewal process. However, this online service cannot be used to renew C1 (medium-sized vehicles) or D1 (minibus) entitlements; those must be completed by post.

First-Time Users

If you are using this service for the first time, you will need to register with an email address, provide your residential addresses for the past three years, your National Insurance number (if known), and a valid UK passport number if you wish to update your licence photo.

Driving While Renewing

You can continue driving while your licence is being renewed, provided all the following conditions are satisfied:

  • You have your doctor's approval to continue driving
  • You held a valid licence previously
  • You comply with the conditions of your previous licence
  • Your application is less than one year old
  • Your last licence was not revoked or denied due to medical reasons
  • You are not currently disqualified
  • You were not disqualified as a high-risk offender on or after 1 June 2013

Renewal by Post

Alternatively, you can apply by post using the D46P application form, which the DVLA automatically sends 90 days before your 70th birthday. If you do not have this form, you can use the D1 application form, available at most Post Offices. Postal applications usually take up to three weeks, though it may be longer if your medical or personal information requires verification.
