Drivers Face £1,000 Fine for Using Phone at Traffic Lights

Motorists are being warned that using a mobile phone while waiting at traffic lights or in a traffic jam could result in a £1,000 fine and a potential driving ban. The law prohibits the use of any device capable of sending or receiving data, including phones, sat navs, and tablets, unless the vehicle is safely parked.

According to official guidance on GOV.UK, the rules apply even when stationary at red lights or railway crossings. Many drivers mistakenly believe these restrictions do not apply in such situations, but they are incorrect.

Violating the rules can lead to six penalty points on a licence and a £200 fine. For new drivers who passed their test within the last two years, the consequences are more severe, as they could lose their licence entirely. In serious cases, offenders may face court action, with penalties including higher fines and disqualification.

There are limited exemptions, such as using a device to make an emergency call or when safely parked. Hands-free devices are permitted as long as they are not held at any point and do not obstruct the driver's view of the road. The Government stresses that drivers must remain in full control of their vehicle at all times.
