As Storm Goretti continues to wreak havoc across the UK, motorists are being urged to avoid using cruise control in icy conditions. The Met Office has issued red wind warnings for some regions, with freezing temperatures turning roads into skating rinks.
Adams Driver Trainer, a driving school website, cautioned: 'While cruise control is convenient in normal conditions, it can be dangerous on icy roads. It reduces your ability to react quickly to changing road conditions.' Experts warn that cruise control can cause a car to surge forward and skid, making it harder to regain control.
Ron Wilson of the Alberta Motor Association added: 'You never want to use it on wet or icy roads. The car can actually surge forward and put the vehicle into a skid. So by the time you catch that, it could be too late.' Rooster Car Insurance also advised drivers not to brake hard when skidding, as this can lock the wheels and reduce control.
The warnings come as the Met Office issued yellow and amber snow alerts for parts of Wales, where accumulations of 5-10 cm are expected widely, with up to 15-25 cm on hills above 200 metres. Drivers are advised to stay cautious and adjust their driving to the hazardous conditions.
