Feathered Fugitives Cause Traffic Standstill on Major Scots Road
Dozens of chickens made a dramatic bid for freedom on Thursday afternoon after a trailer transporting them overturned on one of Scotland's busiest roads. The incident caused significant disruption on the A9 northbound, bringing traffic to a complete standstill near Dunblane.
Scene of the Accident
The unusual event unfolded at approximately 1pm on Thursday, November 13, close to the Glassingall Estate on the outskirts of Dunblane in Stirlingshire. An SUV, towing a trailer packed with live poultry, was involved in a crash that caused the trailer to detach and tip over.
Eyewitnesses described a surreal scene as scores of brown chickens seized their unexpected opportunity, spilling across the tarmac and scurrying around the overturned vehicle. One astonished onlooker remarked, "There could be around 100 chickens on the road. I have never seen anything like it."
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Emergency services were swiftly dispatched to the area. While police worked to manage the resulting traffic chaos and implement a full road closure, others focused on the challenging task of rounding up the escaped birds. The operation involved herding the chickens and attempting to return them to blue plastic crates.
A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed the details, stating: "The A9 is closed northbound at Balhadie near Dunblane following a report of a crash involving a pickup and trailer carrying chickens." Motorists were strongly advised to find alternative routes and avoid the area entirely while the clear-up operation continued.
