Driver Loses Control and Crashes onto Railway Line

A car careered through a fence and ended up on a railway track in Cornwall, forcing the line to close for several hours. The incident occurred in the Carbis Bay area between St Erth and St Ives, blocking the railway and causing all services between the stations to be cancelled.

The incident was reported around 6am on 3 July 2026, according to traffic monitoring site Inrix. Great Western Railway (GWR) confirmed that the vehicle had been recovered, but disruption was expected to continue until 5pm.

Network Rail Apologises for Severe Disruption

Craig Munday, mobile operations manager at Network Rail, said in a video posted to X that the driver had "lost control of their vehicle and careered through the fencing and onto the line." He added that the incident had "severely impacted our ability to run a service today" and apologised to commuters.

Munday stated that Network Rail was "doing all we can to get the railway back up and running," as reported by Cornwall Live. Shocking images showed a white or silver car tilted over a hedge with its front end touching the train line.

Limited Alternatives Provided for Passengers

GWR earlier said it had been unable to source any coaches to run in place of the train service, but had arranged limited taxis to run between St Erth and St Ives. The operator later confirmed the line was open and train services were returning to normal, with disruption expected until 17:00.
