Incident halts all services on St Erth-St Ives line
A railway line in Cornwall remained closed for most of the day after a vehicle "careered through fencing" and ended up on the tracks. Great Western Railway (GWR) confirmed the car was blocking the railway between St Erth and St Ives in the Carbis Bay area. Initial reports of the incident emerged at around 6am, according to traffic monitoring site Inrix.
All rail services between the two stations were cancelled throughout the day. Disruption was originally expected to last until midday, but the line remained shut for several more hours. GWR confirmed just before 3pm that the vehicle had been removed, and services were expected to restart at 3:19pm from St Erth to St Ives and 3:34pm from St Ives to St Erth, according to Cornwall Live.
Driver lost control, vehicle ends up on tracks
In a video shared on X, Craig Munday, mobile operations manager at Network Rail, explained that the driver "lost control of their vehicle and careered through the fencing and onto the line." He added that Network Rail was "doing all we can to get the railway back up and running." Footage appeared to show a white or silver car that had gone over a hedge and landed on its front end on the train line.
Limited alternative transport arranged
GWR stated earlier that it had been unable to source coaches to operate in place of the rail service but arranged limited taxis to run between St Erth and St Ives. The incident caused significant disruption for passengers throughout the day.
