Belfast International Airport Implements Steep Rise in Drop-off Charges
Motorists using Belfast International Airport will now face a significant increase in fees for dropping off passengers, with the cost rising to £5 for a 10-minute slot. This change, effective from Monday, 9 March 2026, marks a 66 per cent jump from the previous £3 charge, impacting both those collecting and dropping off travellers at Northern Ireland's largest airport.
New Pricing Structure and Penalties
According to airport officials, the new £5 fee applies to vehicles spending less than 10 minutes in the drop-off zone adjacent to the terminal building. Payment must be made upon exit, and cars are prohibited from being left unattended at any time. For those exceeding the 10-minute limit, penalty charges of up to £60 will be enforced, underscoring the airport's strict adherence to the time restrictions.
In response to the hike, Belfast International Airport has highlighted alternative options for passengers. Blue Badge holders are encouraged to utilise the Short Stay Car Park, which offers free parking for up to 30 minutes when dropping off or collecting individuals. Additionally, the Long Stay Car Park remains a cost-free alternative for 15-minute periods, providing access to the terminals without incurring charges.

A statement from Belfast International Airport, as reported by BBC News, explained that the revised pricing reflects "significant cost pressures that many businesses across Northern Ireland are currently facing." The airport emphasised its commitment to ongoing improvements, noting a £100 million investment programme that has already delivered enhancements such as a new terminal extension, upgraded security hall, and an improved duty-free shopping experience.

This move by Belfast International is part of a wider trend across UK airports, with London Gatwick Airport also recently increasing its drop-off charges. At Gatwick, motorists must now pay £10 for drop-offs in front of terminals, a 43 per cent rise from the previous £7 fee. As Britain's second-busiest airport, Gatwick is the first in the UK to implement a double-figure drop-off charge, attributing the increase to a surge in business rates following recent budgetary changes.
A spokesperson for Gatwick commented, "This increase in the drop-off charge is not a decision we have taken lightly; however, we are facing a number of increasing costs, including a more than doubling of our business rates in the recent Budget." This highlights the financial challenges faced by aviation hubs nationwide, prompting adjustments in passenger fees to offset rising operational expenses.
