Millmoor, the former home of Rotherham United, could finally be demolished almost 20 years after it last hosted a men's football match. The ground has been largely untouched since the club left in 2008.
History of Millmoor
Millmoor was Rotherham United's home from 1907 until 2008. Due to disputes over ownership and redevelopment, the club moved temporarily to Don Valley athletics stadium in Sheffield before building the 12,000-capacity New York Stadium, which opened in 2012. Millmoor, visible from the new ground across a railway line, has remained largely untouched.
Recent attempts at revival
In 2024, Ken Booth Jr, son of long-time owner Ken Booth, spruced up the site, clearing debris for use by local junior teams and Doncaster Belles women's team. But two years on, the venue faces demolition after ground owners CF Booth entered administration. The Ron Hull Group has acquired Millmoor.
Demolition plans
A statement from the Ron Hull Group said: "The buildings and structures selected in the current application to demolish are all in a poor condition due to years of neglect and are suffering from a general lack of maintenance, specifically elements like roof finishes and the structures themselves." It added that the main stand has been exposed to the elements since at least 2007 and the high cost of repair makes the site unbuyable.
If the local authority approves the plan, the Millmoor Lane and Railway stand and adjoining buildings will be levelled, with work expected to conclude by the end of January 2027. Rotherham United are currently preparing for life in League Two after relegation from League One last season.
