Sefton road A5036 to close overnight for bridge works
A5036 Sefton overnight closures for bridge works

National Highways will close the A5036 Trunk Road (Princess Way) in Sefton overnight next month for bridge inspections and general maintenance. The closures will affect both eastbound and westbound carriageways between the A565 Crosby Road South junction and Bridge Road Roundabout.

Closure schedule and legal details

The overnight closures are scheduled from Tuesday, November 24 to Thursday, November 26, between 10pm and 5am each night, according to a public notice published in the ECHO. The legal order, made under section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, comes into force on Monday, November 23 and carries a maximum duration of 18 months.

The notice states that the prohibition will apply only at times indicated by traffic signs and may continue on subsequent nights, within the same overnight hours, until the works are complete.

Location and diversion routes

The affected stretch is Princess Way between the A565 Crosby Road South junction and Bridge Road Roundabout in the L21 area of Sefton, covering both directions. Signed diversion routes will operate via alternative junctions of the A5036 and local roads.

Drivers should follow on-street signage and allow extra time for night-time journeys. Access exemptions apply to emergency services, traffic officers and winter maintenance vehicles as specified in the notice.

Reason for the works and impact

The programme allows bridge inspections and other general maintenance to be carried out safely, reducing the need for longer disruptions during daytime traffic. Anyone travelling through the L21 area on those nights, including shift workers and local businesses scheduling deliveries, may wish to plan alternative routes and check live travel information before setting off.

The scheme is promoted by National Highways Limited. The public notice names S Smith as the official and lists the company’s registered offices in Salford and Birmingham. Those with concerns or who believe they may be adversely impacted can contact National Highways by email at sam.smith@nationalhighways.co.uk.
