A19 Crash: Major Tyne & Wear Road Closed After Serious Late-Night Collision
A19 closed both ways after serious Tyne and Wear crash

A major route in the North East has been shut down in both directions following a serious overnight collision. The incident occurred on the A19 in Tyne and Wear, leading to significant travel disruption for motorists on Saturday morning.

Details of the A19 Incident

The collision happened at around 11pm on Friday night (5th December 2025). The affected section is between the A1058 Silverlink Roundabout, near Tynemouth, and the A1056 Killingworth Way at Killingworth. National Highways confirmed the closure extends to the A191 at Holystone.

Emergency services, including Northumbria Police, are at the scene. National Highways Traffic Officers and contractors are assisting with managing the resulting traffic chaos.

Road Closure and Investigation

Due to the severity of the incident, authorities have stated the road will remain closed into the morning. This extended closure is necessary to allow for a detailed collision investigation to be carried out safely.

A statement from National Highways read: "Due to the nature of the incident, the road will be closed into the morning to allow for collision investigation works to take place."

Diversion Routes for Drivers

Drivers are being urged to plan alternative journeys and allow extra time. A signed diversion is in operation for northbound traffic:

  1. Exit the A19 northbound at the Silverlink Roundabout.
  2. Take the fourth exit onto the A1058.
  3. After a short distance, turn left onto Norham Road northbound.
  4. Follow Norham Road to the A191 roundabout and take the second exit onto the A191.
  5. Continue on the A191 through the next two roundabouts.
  6. At Holystone Roundabout, turn right to re-join the A19 northbound.

Motorists should follow the solid triangle diversion symbol. Southbound drivers are also affected and should seek alternative routes, expecting heavy congestion on surrounding roads.

The full impact on Saturday travel is still unfolding, with significant delays expected throughout the area until the road reopens.
