Drivers on a major arterial route in the North East faced severe disruption and unusual traffic conditions this morning following a serious incident. The A19 in County Durham was completely closed in both directions after a reported collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian, prompting a significant emergency response.
Police Incident and Road Closure
National Highways North East confirmed the closure earlier today, describing it as a "police led incident." Cleveland Police officers are currently on the scene, with National Highways Traffic Officers managing the traffic flow. The closure affects the stretch between Portrack and the A139 at Billingham bottoms.
A police spokesperson stated, "The road is expected to remain closed for some time, following a report of a collision. Please use alternative routes, and thank you for your patience." This indicates that the disruption could be prolonged as investigations continue.
Emergency Response and Scene Details
Witnesses reported seeing a blue tent erected on the carriageway close to a flyover on the northbound side, a common procedure in serious traffic incidents. One driver recounted, "There was a blue tent up on the actual carriageway, just before the flyover. It was on the side of the A19 as if you're driving towards Hartlepool, northbound."
The North East Ambulance Service dispatched a substantial team to the location. A spokesperson said, "We were called just before 7am today (9 FEB) to an incident on the A19 Fleet Bridge Road. We dispatched two paramedic ambulances, a doctor, a specialist paramedic and a clinical team leader to attend a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle." This multi-agency response underscores the severity of the incident.
Traffic Chaos and Diversions
With the road shut, police were forced to turn vehicles around, leading to chaotic scenes. The same driver added, "Police were turning people around on the road so they were having to drive on the wrong side of the road." This temporary measure, while necessary for safety, added to the confusion and delays for motorists.
National Highways has implemented a formal diversion route to guide drivers around the closure. Motorists are advised to exit the northbound A19(T) at Portrack Interchange, then follow the A1046 west, continuing over three roundabouts. After 200 meters, they should navigate a one-way system onto the A1305 north, then take the A177 northwest for 1.6km, followed by the A1027 for 2.1km, before rejoining the A19(T) via an entry slip road after 800 meters.
This incident highlights the significant impact that serious collisions can have on major transport corridors, causing extensive delays and requiring complex traffic management solutions. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid the area and use alternative routes until further notice.
