Motorists have been warned they could face fines of up to £2,500 if they fail to keep their windscreens clean during the UK's stormy weather. The warning comes from motoring experts at LeaseCar.uk, who highlight that dirt buildup from road salt and spray is common at this time of year, especially during storms like Storm Chandra.
The 1986 Road Vehicles Regulations make it illegal to drive without a clear view of the road and surrounding traffic. The Highway Code also requires windscreens and windows to be kept clean and free from obstructions. Drivers who breach these rules risk a fine of up to £1,000, three penalty points, and possible disqualification.
For commercial vehicle drivers, including those operating buses and coaches, the fine for obstructed windscreens can reach £2,500. In serious cases, motorists may also face charges of careless or inconsiderate driving if their actions fall below the expected standard.
The Met Office issued a weather warning for Storm Chandra, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall, further increasing the risk of grime-covered vehicles. Experts urge drivers to clean their windows and other key parts of their vehicle before heading out to avoid penalties and ensure safety.
