A massive pileup involving more than 100 vehicles has shut down a major highway in Michigan, leaving drivers stranded in heavy snow. The crash occurred on Monday morning on Interstate 196 near Hudsonville, southwest of Grand Rapids, prompting authorities to close both directions of the road.
Michigan State Police reported numerous injuries after vehicles collided or slid off the road, but no fatalities have been confirmed. The pileup included over 30 semi-trailer trucks, complicating the cleanup effort.
The incident is part of a larger winter storm sweeping across the United States, with the National Weather Service issuing warnings for extreme cold and winter storms from northern Minnesota through Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. Snow even fell as far south as the Florida Panhandle, and freezing temperatures are expected overnight in north-central Florida and southeast Georgia.
Stranded motorists were being transported to Hudsonville High School, where they could contact family or arrange alternative transport. Officials anticipated the interstate would remain closed for several hours while vehicles were removed.
