Greece has overtaken mainland Spain in new summer holiday bookings from UK travellers, marking a significant shift in European travel patterns. Traditionally, Spain is the leading destination for British holidaymakers, but recent data from the Advantage Travel Partnership reveals a notable change.
Booking Trends Shift
According to the Advantage Travel Partnership, Greece's share of bookings from UK travellers increased from 7.7 per cent to 9.8 per cent by the end of April. Meanwhile, mainland Spain's share dropped from 8.7 per cent to 7 per cent. This surge follows Athens' unilateral decision in mid-April to disregard European Commission instructions regarding the EU entry-exit system and abolish biometric border checks for British visitors.
Travelers Prioritise Smooth Arrivals
Julia Lo Bue-Said, chief executive of Advantage, attributes this trend to travellers prioritising destinations with smoother and more predictable arrival experiences. She highlighted concerns about potential disruption at EU borders, which have led holidaymakers to seek alternatives. Despite Greece's move lacking legal basis, Brussels has not yet intervened. The European Commission maintains that the roll-out of the EU entry-exit system is progressing well in most other locations.
This development underscores the importance of border procedures in travel decisions, with Greece emerging as a preferred choice for those seeking hassle-free entry.
