WorldAtlas, a travel publication, has released a list of 11 Scottish towns with what it describes as 'unforgettable' main streets, evaluating factors such as architecture, landmarks, and heritage. The list, published on July 16, 2026, features destinations from the Scottish Borders to the Highlands and islands.
Melrose: A Borders Gem
Melrose, nestled at the foot of the Eildon Hills in the Scottish Borders, is celebrated for its High Street. Known for its pink-toned 18th-century architecture and independent businesses, the street includes cafes like Apples for Jam, gift shop Butterfly, and clothing store Sarah Thomson. WorldAtlas noted: 'Backed by the three peaks of the Eildon Hills, Melrose’s High Street has pink-toned 18th-century architecture and local shops. Selections include bakeries and artisan craft stores, as well as coffee shops and pubs, including Baguette'n'Go, a sandwich shop.'
The Trimontium Museum, located near Market Square, details the region's Iron Age history and its role as the largest Roman fort north of Hadrian's Wall. At the other end of the street, Gibson Caravan Park offers hiking and cycling trails along the River Tweed, along with campsites and sports fields.
Plockton: Jewel of the Highlands
Plockton, often called the 'Jewel of the Highlands', features Harbour Street overlooking Loch Carron. The street is home to the Plockton Distillery, The Harbour Fish Bar, and the Plockton Inn. WorldAtlas highlighted the views and wildlife: 'On Harbour Street, a row of 19th-century whitewashed cottages overlooks Loch Carron, where seals and dolphins can sometimes be spotted. The Wester Ross mountains oversee the streetscape and its unique palm tree-like New Zealand cabbage trees.'
Dunkeld and Other Notable Streets
Dunkeld's Bridge Street in Perth and Kinross earned a spot for landmarks like ARAN Bakery and the 19th-century Dunkeld Bridge. WorldAtlas stated that Bridge Street 'makes an impression.' Other streets include Culross' Back Causeway, noted for cobblestones and whitewashed cottages, and Pittenweem's High Street, praised for colourful buildings and the Parish Church.
Island Main Streets
Three island main streets made the list: Tobermory's Main Street on Mull, Portree Harbour on Skye, and Guildford Street in Millport on Great Cumbrae. Rounding out the list are Kelso's Horsemarket in the Borders, Crieff's High Street in Perthshire, and Inveraray's Main Street in Argyll and Bute.
