A Russia-flagged oil tanker, the Anatoly Kolodkin, has docked at Cuba's Matanzas port, delivering approximately 700,000 barrels of Russian crude oil. This shipment marks the first significant oil delivery to Cuba since the Trump administration severed the island's fuel supply lines, exacerbating a severe energy crisis.
Humanitarian Exemption for Sanctioned Vessel
The Anatoly Kolodkin, which is under US sanctions, was permitted to enter Cuban territorial waters on Sunday and unload its cargo for humanitarian reasons. Cuba has faced widespread blackouts and critical disruptions to public services, having not received an oil tanker in three months prior to this arrival.
Impact on Cuba's Energy Infrastructure
The Russian Urals crude oil is expected to provide much-needed relief to Cuba's Communist-run government. However, it will take several days to process the crude into refined products suitable for power generation. This delay means that immediate resolution of the blackouts, such as those witnessed in Havana recently, is unlikely.
The delivery underscores Cuba's deepening reliance on Russian energy amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and US sanctions. The energy crisis has severely impacted daily life, with reports of prolonged power outages affecting homes, businesses, and essential services across the island.
