Livingston MP Gregor Poynton has welcomed the removal of US tariffs on Scotch whisky, describing the move as a major boost for one of Scotland’s most important industries and for the businesses and workers across the Livingston constituency who help power its success.
From today, Scotch whisky exports to the United States will once again be tariff-free, supporting one of Scotland’s largest export industries and helping businesses compete in one of their most valuable international markets.

Livingston is home to a number of businesses that play an important role in Scotland’s world-renowned whisky industry. These include Glenmorangie’s custom-built bottling facility at Alba Campus, where its Glenmorangie and Ardbeg brands are bottled; Ian Macleod Distillers, the independent family-owned Scotch whisky producer based in Broxburn; Aceo Limited on Deans Industrial Estate, parent company of the Murray McDavid Scotch whisky brand; and the major maturation and warehousing facilities operated by The North British Distillery at nearby Addiewell.

“West Lothian has a proud place in Scotland’s whisky industry. From internationally recognised distillers and bottling facilities to warehousing, logistics and specialist whisky businesses, companies across our area make an important contribution to one of Scotland’s biggest export success stories.
“The United States is Scotch whisky’s largest export market, so removing these tariffs gives businesses greater confidence to invest, grow exports and continue supporting jobs throughout the supply chain.
“This is a positive step for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic and demonstrates the value of maintaining strong trading relationships that help Scottish products reach customers around the world.
“Our local businesses have built an international reputation for quality and innovation. Removing these barriers to trade will help firms across West Lothian continue growing, creating jobs and attracting investment into our communities.”
Export value and industry impact
The United States is the Scotch whisky industry’s most valuable export market, with exports worth £933 million in 2025.
Industry leaders have said the return to tariff-free trade will provide greater certainty for investment while benefiting businesses throughout the wider supply chain, including cooperages, transport, hospitality, retail and agriculture.
Mr Poynton added: “Whether it’s distilling, bottling, warehousing, logistics or specialist whisky businesses, West Lothian plays an important role in the success of one of Scotland’s biggest exports.
