Aston Villa secured a memorable Europa League triumph with a 3-0 victory over Freiburg in Istanbul, handing manager Unai Emery a record fifth title in the competition. Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers sealed the win as Villa claimed their first major European trophy since 1982 and a first piece of silverware since the 1996 League Cup.
Tielemans broke the deadlock on 41 minutes with a crisp volley from Morgan Rogers' cross, before Buendía curled a stunning left-foot effort into the top corner on the stroke of half-time. Rogers then added a third just before the hour mark, finishing from close range after a smart run to the front post. Villa dominated throughout, with Freiburg rarely threatening Emiliano Martínez, who played despite having broken a finger during the warm-up.
The victory sparked jubilant scenes among Villa's travelling supporters, who arrived in Istanbul in numbers far exceeding the official allocation. Goalkeeper Martínez was seen giving Emery a piggyback during the celebrations, while captain John McGinn lifted the trophy to a sea of claret and blue. Co-owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens also took turns hoisting the trophy overhead.
The Prince of Wales, a lifelong Villa fan, attended the match and filmed the trophy lift before posting congratulations on social media. For Freiburg, it was the biggest occasion in their 121-year history, and although they were ultimately outclassed, their memorable run to the final was widely acknowledged. Villa, meanwhile, have already secured their place in next season's Champions League.
