Experiencing the World's Greatest Cruise Ships: A First-Hand Account

Time Magazine's World's Greatest Places of 2026 has highlighted four cruise lines, and I had the privilege of sailing on two of them: the recently launched MSC World America and Disney Destiny. This annual list, curated from nominations by global contributors, showcases top accommodations worldwide, including past entries like Icon of the Seas and Havila Polaris.

Time Magazine's 2026 List Features Diverse Cruise Options

The latest selection includes the polar expedition vessel Douglas Mawson from AE Expeditions, a 154-passenger ship marking the brand's return to east Antarctica after 15 years. It is praised for eliminating single supplements and its sustainable features, such as an Ulstein X-BOW hull that reduces fuel consumption. Additionally, the Vietnam-focused Bhaya Soul, a 20-cabin overnight cruise, is noted for its mindfulness and wellness experiences in Ha Long Bay.

MSC World America: A Mega Ship with Thrilling Attractions

Launched in April 2025, MSC World America boasts a gross tonnage of 216,638, accommodating 6,764 passengers across 19 dining venues and 18 bars. My favorite feature was the Cliffhanger Swing, located beside the onboard waterpark, which allows guests to hang over the side of the vessel, offering breathtaking sea views 50 metres below—though it's best avoided right after meals.

Other highlights include an American-style comedy club, the first Eataly at sea, a delicious Greek restaurant in the outdoor World Promenade serving melt-in-the-mouth feta pastries, an F1 Simulator, and a production of Dirty Dancing: In Concert in the World Theatre. MSC World America offers itineraries around the Bahamas and the Caribbean, with prices starting from £491 per person.

Disney Destiny: A Superhero-Themed Adventure for All Ages

Disney Destiny, which I boarded for its christening and maiden sailing in November 2025, hits the sweet spot for fans who are too old for princesses and Pixar. Perfect for superhero enthusiasts, it features a giant Spider-Man hanging off the stern and a Black Panther statue in the Grand Hall. Guests can meet characters like Mickey, Minnie, and Donald Duck, with adult-only areas for hot tubs, brunch, and dinner.

At 144,000 gross tonnes and a capacity of around 3,466 passengers, the ship is filled with Disney details. Cabins are hero-themed, with murals from Hercules, Mulan, Big Hero 6, and The Incredibles. They are exceptionally user-friendly, with labeled switches and separate toilet and bathroom facilities for convenience. Hidden Mickey ears in the carpet and a Cruella de Vil-themed bar add to the magic. Disney Destiny offers Caribbean itineraries from £651 per person.

Both ships exemplify the innovation and luxury that earned them spots on Time Magazine's prestigious list, providing unforgettable experiences for travelers seeking adventure and relaxation on the high seas.
