A Canadian woman has described being detained for 12 hours at a Russian border crossing, saying she felt as though she had been kidnapped. The woman, who asked not to be named, said she was held in a freezing cell without explanation.
The incident occurred when she was travelling to Russia for work. She said she was taken from an immigration office and patted down like a criminal before being sent to a detention centre. She was not allowed to contact a lawyer.
She was eventually released after 12 hours, but said the experience was traumatic. She compared her treatment to that of a hostage and said she felt lucky to have been released compared to others who have been detained for longer periods.
