New £2.7bn Western Sydney Airport Opening Date Confirmed for October
Western Sydney Airport Opens Oct 25, 10m Passengers Yearly

A brand new £2.7 billion airport in Australia has officially opened after more than a decade of development, with predictions it will serve up to 10 million passengers each year. Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) will welcome its first passengers on October 25, marking the country's first major airport in over 50 years.

Investment and Infrastructure

The project is part of the federal government's AUD$18 billion (£9.45 billion) investment in the Western Sydney region, which also includes a future Sydney Metro Airport rail connection and significant road upgrades. This investment reflects the growing need for additional aviation capacity in the area.

Airlines and Routes

So far, only four airlines have announced plans to operate from WSI. Jetstar, the budget arm of Qantas, will operate the airport's first commercial passenger flight, an Airbus A320 heading to the Gold Coast. Jetstar plans to operate up to 14 flights per week between WSI and Melbourne, four weekly flights to the Gold Coast, and three weekly flights to Brisbane, according to ABC News.

For international flights, Air New Zealand will start Auckland services on October 26, and Singapore Airlines will launch daily services to the city-state on November 23.

No Night Curfew

Unlike Sydney Airport at Mascot, which is subject to an 11pm-6am curfew due to strict noise regulations, WSI will operate without such restrictions. This provides airlines with greater scheduling flexibility compared to other major Australian cities like Melbourne.

Economic Impact

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated, "It wasn't a matter of if Sydney needed a new airport, but when." He added, "Fifteen years later this new airport is almost ready to open. I want to thank the tens of thousands of people who over the years planned, built and are now testing Western Sydney International Airport and the surrounding infrastructure."

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, described the opening as a "big moment for Sydney," noting it has created over 12,800 jobs, half of which are local.

Background

Located at Badgerys Creek, about 37 miles west of central Sydney, the airport serves a region that has grown into Australia's third-largest economy and is home to half of Sydney's population. Over 50 airlines currently operate from Sydney Airport in Mascot, mostly overseas carriers, but the new airport is expected to alleviate pressure and provide new flight options.
