A couple has completed one of Wales' most ambitious restoration projects, transforming a fire-damaged Georgian mansion in Monmouthshire into a spectacular £5 million family home. The Grade II listed Bertholey estate, which had been derelict for over a century, has been lovingly rebuilt and is now on the market.
A History of Fire and Ruin
Before 1905, Bertholey was one of Wales' most striking neoclassical mansions, set within more than 161 acres of parkland, lakes and woodland. A catastrophic fire that year destroyed the house, leaving just three walls standing. The cause remains uncertain, with accounts ranging from an accidental blaze started by an inebriated relative to a deliberate act linked to a family dispute or insurance fraud.
For decades, the residence was left to decay, engulfed by vegetation and battered by the weather. The property was later absorbed into an agricultural operation, with cattle roaming through the remnants and birds nesting in the remaining walls. Local youngsters occasionally ventured into the structure, treating it as a perilous adventure site.
A Three-Year Restoration
The couple, who wish to remain unnamed, took on the challenge despite being told they were "utterly foolish" for tackling a completely derelict mansion. Their daughter Sonia, who runs a business from the estate, said they were captivated by the property's potential and its spectacular views.
Remarkably, the sweeping rescue and restoration was completed in just three years. Sonia attributes this to her parents' meticulous planning, unwavering dedication and sheer hard graft. They enlisted a planning consultant and commissioned architectural drawings, but the overall vision existed entirely in their minds.
Authentic Details and Personal Touches
The couple researched the original architect, believed to be a pupil of Sir John Soane, and visited his other works across the country to ensure the renovation was as authentic as possible. Sonia's mother, who has a real artistic flair, handled all the interior design herself, creating bespoke cornice work and sourcing marble and woodwork from Penang.
Local residents and those with historical ties to the property provided photographs, anecdotes and historical records, which proved enormously meaningful to the couple. One person brought a ledger with wage details in shillings from before the fire, which the father treasured.
A Cherished Home for Sale
The property, which includes a walled garden, stables, dovecote and an indoor swimming pool, has remained a vibrant family home. However, the time has come for the family to downsize. Sonia admitted the renovation costs were worth "every penny," as Bertholey is truly "one of a kind."
The Monmouthshire mansion is on the market with a guide price in excess of £5 million through Savills, Cardiff.
