The historic Welsh coastal town of Cardigan has been ranked eighth in Time Out's list of 14 must-visit seaside destinations for 2026. The town, positioned where Ceredigion meets Pembrokeshire, was praised for its stunning natural surroundings, an impressive array of dining options and fashionable venues that inject a vibrant, youthful energy into the historic market town.
The UK's coastline is attracting more attention than ever, largely thanks to the opening of the King Charles III Coastal Path, which makes the entirety of the UK's coast accessible on foot. From tucked-away coastal villages to iconic seaside resorts, visitors are beginning to discover places they might never have otherwise encountered.
Food and independent shopping
Cardigan boasts a wide array of independent shops, both established and newly opened, with a wealth of vintage and antique stores. One well-loved destination is The Projects on Middle Mwldan, marked by a large mural on its doors, offering an ever-changing selection of homeware and second-hand furniture. DJK Collectables and Keith's Antiques in the market provide further vintage finds, while Mundos stocks gifts and clothing.
Fashion fans can visit the iconic Hiut Denim factory, where the celebrated Hiut jeans, famously worn by Meghan Markle, are crafted. On the food front, Time Out singled out Crwst for its "sickeningly good brunch", which has earned a place on numerous lists of Britain's finest bakeries. Grain was also noted for serving "impeccable pizza and pints" in a riverside courtyard setting, while the traditional pub the Castle Inn offers pub quizzes, live music and comedy nights.
Historic and natural attractions
At the heart of the town stands Cardigan Castle, overlooking the river and steeped in over 800 years of Welsh literary and musical heritage. The castle hosts a year-round programme of events, activities and experiences for visitors of all ages, from festivals to workshops and exhibitions.
A 10-minute drive from the town centre lies Mwnt Beach, a tranquil bay with coastal views and the possibility of spotting bottlenose dolphins. The beach draws visitors throughout the year and remains popular with locals for swimming or walking up to the church at the foot of the hill. One TripAdvisor reviewer wrote: "We have been here many times, and we never get tired with the Beaty of Mwnt. The church is lovely and quaint, but the beach is just wonderful. We have been paddleboarding in the past only to be joined by seals, which is so pleasurable. Mwnt is so beautiful any time of the year."
With its fusion of history and contemporary charm, the town earns its place on Time Out's list of destinations to explore in 2026.
