A recent interrailing trip across Europe has crowned Vienna as the standout city, surpassing even Paris in the eyes of one traveller. The two-week journey, which began with a Eurostar from London to Brussels, included stops in Ghent, Prague, Vienna, Munich, Stuttgart, and Paris. Despite visiting seven cities, the Austrian capital left the strongest impression.
The visitor described being 'infatuated' from the moment they stepped off the train, praising Vienna's architecture, food, and parks. Highlights included the UNESCO-protected city centre, Schönbrunn Palace, and St. Stephen's Cathedral. The Belvedere Palace grounds were also noted as an 'Instagrammer's dream' with manicured gardens and grand stone paths.
Day two involved exploring the Prater theme park, which offers free entry and features one of the world's oldest ferris wheels. The park's bars and restaurants serve Austrian beer and wine, with occasional folk music performances. Later, the traveller relaxed at Copa Beach along the Danube, where locals gather for beers after work, creating a laid-back atmosphere.
Culinary recommendations included apple strudel, Viennese coffee (a blend of espresso, chocolate, and cream), and schnitzel, best enjoyed at Naschmarkt. The market was described as having an excellent atmosphere, likened to a 'favourite beer garden but better'. The Hofburg Palace was another architectural highlight.
The traveller concluded that Vienna was the best city of the trip, expressing a desire to return for a standalone visit with a larger budget to explore its museums. The city's blend of grandeur, culture, and relaxed ambience set it apart from other European capitals.
