US Couple Visits UK After Amazon Fire Stick Screensaver Inspiration

An American couple from California embarked on an extraordinary journey to the United Kingdom after becoming captivated by a screensaver image on their Amazon Fire Stick. Deidre Wood and Stephen Shaw, residents of Long Beach in Los Angeles, regularly admired the rotating background images on their streaming device, but one particular photograph of the rolling hills in the Newlands Valley, near Keswick in the Lake District, left a lasting impression.

The Screensaver That Sparked a Quest

Deidre Wood, a 60-year-old college professor, described how the image "kept speaking" to her, igniting a desire to see the picturesque landscape in person. The couple was also enchanted by another screensaver featuring the Quiraing in Scotland, which further motivated their mission. Using online resources and clues from previous groups, Deidre meticulously researched the location, studying maps and notes to pinpoint the Newlands Inn as a key landmark.

A Journey Across the Pond

Deidre recounted their determination to The Keswick Reminder, explaining, "We were told once you see this landmark, then keep going, but you're going to think that you are not there and you are not finding it. We just kept going and we both went round a corner and there it was." Their trip from the USA to the UK included stops at several iconic British sites, such as Bath, Stonehenge, and Chatsworth House, in addition to visiting the Quiraing in Scotland.

Experiencing the Lake District Firsthand

Upon arriving at the Newlands Valley, the couple was able to admire the fells of Robinson, Hindscarth, and Dale Head up close. Deidre expressed being "smitten" with the area, stating, "I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was such fun." The Lake District, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017, typically attracts around 18 million visitors annually, showcasing its global appeal.

Tourism Trends in the Region

Despite its stunning landscapes, Cumbria has not fully recovered to pre-pandemic visitor levels. Recent data from the Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor (STEAM) indicates a 14 percent decline in overall visitors in 2024 compared to 2019. However, there are positive signs for the future, as Google searches for the Lake District are currently soaring compared to last year.

This surge suggests that holidaymakers may be opting for domestic travel, with enquiries for "UK holiday cottage" increasing by 260 percent this month. Additionally, interest in the rolling hills and scenic views of the Lake District has risen by 129 percent compared to the same period last year, indicating a potential rebound in tourism for the region.
