Skegness Beach Named UK's Most Littered, with Complaints of Human Faeces and Dirty Nappies

Skegness Beach in Lincolnshire has been identified as the UK's most litter-strewn beach, according to new analysis by plastic waste specialists BusinessWaste.co.uk. The study examined TripAdvisor reviews to determine how frequently litter was mentioned, with Skegness topping the list, followed by Margate Main Sands and Formby Beach in Merseyside.

One review from June 2025 warned of “human waste and serviettes covered in faeces” in the dunes between the car park and the beach. Another visitor reported “a lot of trash, dirty nappies and baby wipes strewn about the place in one area, and broken glass.” Despite these complaints, many tourists have posted positive reviews, praising the “immaculate golden sands” and seaside attractions.

Visitors to Margate Main Sands have also voiced grievances, citing broken glass, dog mess, and human urine. At Formby Beach, reviews mention abandoned picnics, discarded disposable BBQs, and even drug paraphernalia. One disgruntled visitor noted the car park was full by 10:30am and the beach already crowded and strewn with rubbish.

Graham Matthews, an expert in plastic waste at BusinessWaste.co.uk, said: “Litter on the UK's beaches turns our natural beauty spots into an eyesore and poses a huge environmental threat to marine life. All this unsightly litter ruins the enjoyment of our beaches, but it also threatens local wildlife. Plastic is a particularly major hazard as it takes so long to break down naturally.”
