Cornwall's St Ives has been crowned the most desirable staycation destination in the UK for 2026, according to the annual Staycation Index Report by Sykes Holiday Cottages. The south coast town took the top spot, followed by Bamburgh in Northumberland in second place.
The report, based on a survey of 2,000 adults, reveals that nearly a third (28 per cent) are more likely to holiday at home this year than in 2025, with 38 per cent planning their main holiday in the UK. Gen Z shows particular enthusiasm, with 53 per cent opting for domestic breaks, up from 45 per cent in 2025.
Coastal destinations remain the most sought-after, with 65 per cent of respondents preferring them, followed by rural areas (56 per cent) and national parks (38 per cent). Bourton-on-the-Water and Salcombe rose in popularity, while Brighton climbed to sixth place, overtaking Lyme Regis which dropped to seventh.
James Shaw, chief commercial officer at Sykes Holiday Cottages, said: “The continued popularity of UK breaks demonstrates that staycations remain a key part of how Brits holiday. More people are choosing to stay at home and prioritising value, flexibility and reassurance when planning time away.”
Tourist attractions influenced 48 per cent of holidaymakers, while fond memories and good reviews swayed 38 per cent and 35 per cent respectively. TV and film also played a role, with 14 per cent citing shows like Peaky Blinders as an influence on their choice of destination.
