Dorset's Sandbanks has been named the UK's best beach, according to a new ranking that excludes Devon and Cornwall from the top five. The list, compiled by luxury holiday company The Thinking Traveller, used Tripadvisor ratings alongside average air and sea temperatures during the busiest months.
Beaches stretching from Kent to Scotland made the top five, with researchers praising the "array of natural beauty and outstanding coastal experiences" available around Britain. A spokesman said: "Whether you prefer a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere or a peaceful, scenic escape, there’s something for everyone on this list."
Fifth to third: Sea Palling, Embleton Bay, and St Andrews West Sands
Sea Palling in Norfolk secured fifth place with a Tripadvisor rating of 4.7 out of five. The beach recorded an average peak air temperature of 19C, while the sea reaches an average of 16.8C. Known for its soft sand, dunes, and sheltered areas created by offshore reefs, its calm conditions make it popular with families, swimmers, and those seeking a quieter day by the coast. A spokesman for The Thinking Traveller said: "Sea Palling beach is the UK's fifth-best beach, combining a high rating score (4.7 out of 5) with mild air (19C) and sea (16.8C) temperatures during peak months."
Embleton Bay in Northumberland took fourth place, offering a long stretch of sand backed by dunes with clear views of Dunstanburgh Castle. The historic castle ruins stand above the coastline, making the beach one of the area's most recognisable locations. It is popular for walking, wildlife spotting, and quieter seaside trips, particularly for visitors wanting natural surroundings rather than busy attractions.
St Andrews West Sands was named the UK's third-best beach and was the only Scottish location in the top five. Located close to the historic town of St Andrews, it offers a large area of sand with room for walking, running, and family activities. The beach is also known for appearing in the opening scenes of the film Chariots of Fire, with views across the North Sea and nearby restaurants, shops, and historic attractions.
Second and first: Botany Bay and Sandbanks
Botany Bay in Kent narrowly missed the top position, finishing second. Located near Broadstairs, the beach is recognised for its pale chalk cliffs, rock formations, and sandy shoreline. At low tide, visitors can explore rock pools and walk further along the beach, though they should remain aware of the tide and avoid standing directly beneath the cliffs. Its distinctive setting has made it popular with families, photographers, and visitors seeking a scenic alternative to busier seaside destinations.
