The Summer Streets programme, a government-funded initiative, is returning to London with nearly £500,000 allocated to 13 boroughs. The funding aims to support outdoor dining, events, markets, and cultural activities, bolstering the city's hospitality and nightlife sectors.
Funding Breakdown and Key Beneficiaries
Four boroughs—Barking & Dagenham, Brent, Greenwich, and Lambeth—have each received grants of up to £100,000. These funds will transform areas with outdoor dining, World Cup screenings, markets, and cultural events.
Barking & Dagenham's Short Blue Place will become a street food market featuring performances from arts and theatre companies. Brent will host over 40 events along Wembley High Road, Ealing Road, and Kingsbury. In Greenwich, General Gordon Square, Beresford Square, and Powis Street in Woolwich will offer al fresco dining, World Cup and Wimbledon screenings, markets, and late-night openings as part of the Woolwich Carnival. Lambeth's Lower Marsh in Waterloo will close roads every Saturday from 9am to 9pm for events like National Theatre Live screenings.
Smaller Schemes and Reduced Fares
Additionally, nine boroughs—Brent, Camden, Ealing, Haringey, Hounslow, Islington, Lewisham, Newham, Sutton, and Waltham Forest—will host smaller 'pocket' schemes, each receiving up to £10,000. These will fund food and drink markets, DJs, live music, and family-friendly events.
Londoners can also benefit from reduced fares: a single fare for unlimited bus and tram journeys on Saturdays and Sundays between 25 July and 31 August.
According to the Mayor of London website, the programme is part of Sadiq Khan's “wider drive to support London’s hospitality and nightlife industries” and aims to help councils and businesses deliver al fresco dining and extended trading hours.
