Manchester's Christmas Market has been named the UK's best for 2026, with Edinburgh taking second place, according to experts at Christmas Tree World. A visitor who tried both markets found Manchester superior, despite Edinburgh's stunning setting.
How the Markets Were Ranked
Christmas Tree World assessed markets across the country using Google searches, entry fees, the number of stalls, proximity to public transport, and December hotel prices. Manchester emerged as the winner, with Edinburgh as runner-up.
The comparison comes from a British citizen who grew up in New Zealand and moved to London in 2024. She visited the Edinburgh Christmas Market in December 2023 and the Manchester Market in November 2025.
Edinburgh's Beauty Overshadowed by Crowds
The Edinburgh Market impressed with its location, offering views of Arthur's Seat from a Ferris wheel and a backdrop of Gothic architecture and Edinburgh Castle. However, the visitor found the crowds unmanageable, especially on a Friday evening and again on Sunday when numbers swelled.
Despite the atmosphere, the sheer volume of visitors made navigation difficult, detracting from the experience.
Manchester's Food and Atmosphere Win Out
In contrast, the Manchester Market at Albert Square had lighter crowds and more diverse food options. The visitor praised a Yorkshire pudding wrap priced at £11, which was so generous she couldn't finish it, and a fruit crumble with custard that outperformed Edinburgh's version.
Manchester's mulled wine was described as sweet, fruity, and delicious, a marked improvement over the mulled cider at Edinburgh, which she found unappealing. While she wouldn't rush back to either market, Manchester would be her preferred choice for its shorter queues, superior food, and easier exit.
