Two British tourists have died after jumping into a swimming pool at a hotel in Albufeira, Portugal, early this morning. The men, aged 27 and 29, were found at the bottom of the pool, and emergency services were called at around 4am. Despite attempts to resuscitate them, both were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, the two men appeared to have been drinking and did not know how to swim. Police have said there is no suspicion of foul play. At least one local newspaper has reported that both men were British and were on holiday with friends.
The Foreign Office has been approached for comment, while Portuguese police could not be reached for an official statement this afternoon.
The incident follows a string of tragedies involving British tourists in the area. On June 4, Scottish tourist Greg Monks, 38, was found dead near Albufeira town centre after going missing a week earlier. He is believed to have died after jumping over a wall and falling down a steep hillside during a night out. Around four hours before his body was found, a 21-year-old British tourist was discovered dead at the back of a residential block below a steep drop near the Old Town. In July 2023, a 27-year-old British tourist also drowned at the Paraiso Hotel in Albufeira.
Last month, town hall chiefs in the resort agreed fines of up to 4,000 euros (£3,375) for holidaymakers who breach a strict new good behaviour code. Penalties of up to £1,250 are in place for people entering bars with their tops off, while fines for spitting or urinating in the street range from £125 to £630.
