The long-standing frustration of air travellers forced to decant toiletries into tiny 100ml bottles may soon be a thing of the past. The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced plans to relax its liquids restrictions, with new scanners allowing larger containers in carry-on luggage.
What’s Changing?
Under the current rules, liquids in hand luggage must be in containers no larger than 100ml and placed in a clear plastic bag. However, new computed tomography (CT) scanners being rolled out at major US airports can create detailed 3D images of baggage contents, making it easier to identify potential threats without strict size limits.
When Will This Happen?
The changes are already being implemented at some airports, including Phoenix Sky Harbor and Chicago O’Hare, with more expected to follow. However, travellers should note that not all airports will have the new technology immediately, so the 100ml rule will remain in place at many locations for now.
What Does This Mean for Travellers?
- You may soon be able to carry larger bottles of liquids, gels and aerosols in your hand luggage
- The requirement to remove liquids from your bag during screening may be eliminated
- Current restrictions remain in place at airports without the new scanners
The move has been welcomed by travel industry experts, who say it will make the security process less stressful for passengers. However, officials caution that security remains the top priority, and additional measures may be implemented if needed.
