The final words of a tourist killed in a shark attack on the last day of her holiday in Egypt have been revealed. The 68-year-old Austrian woman told her partner shortly before the attack: "I'll go back in for a moment."
The woman died in an ambulance from shock after losing an arm and leg in the incident at Sahl Hasheesh, a popular bay on Egypt's Red Sea coast near Hurghada. Chilling video footage showed her struggling back to shore wearing a flipper, with blood visible in the water.
Watching Russian tourists filmed the scene and criticised the lack of lifeguards or rescuers. One witness said: "People are rushing out of the sea. There's no ambulance, there's no-one helping her. She's got no arm - up to her elbow. The shark grabbed her and twisted her around."
The woman reached the shore but died despite attempts to save her. One account said: "Doctors fought for her life for a long time, giving her cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but she could not be saved."
Following the attack on Friday, local authorities prohibited swimming, diving, snorkelling and fishing from the area to Makadi Bay for three days.
