A Canadian tourist has been killed and at least 13 others injured in a mass shooting at Mexico's ancient Teotihuacan pyramids. The attack occurred on Monday when a gunman opened fire from atop one of the historic structures, prompting chaos among visitors.
The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Mexican national Julio Cesar Jasso, died from a self-inflicted wound, according to the State of Mexico government. Seven of the 13 injured were wounded by gunshots, while others were hurt in the ensuing panic, including falls from the pyramids.
Among the injured were six Americans, three Colombians, two Brazilians, one Russian, and one Canadian, with ages ranging from six to 61. A tour guide at the scene recounted that the shooter began firing upward from the platform of the Pyramid of the Moon, then targeted tourists as they descended. Witnesses described hearing gunfire and seeing people jumping off the pyramid to escape.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed solidarity with the victims and families, vowing a thorough investigation. Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed the death of a Canadian and another injured. The U.S. ambassador offered support. The archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been closed until further notice.
