A tourist in Bali was handcuffed by police after allegedly boasting online about breaking the island's strict Day of Silence rules. The man, believed to be from Switzerland, was filmed being surrounded by officials before being detained and bundled into a vehicle.
The arrest came after he allegedly shared a string of social media clips appearing to mock Nyepi Day, a sacred Hindu celebration observed across Bali. Nyepi, known as the 'Day of Silence', sees the entire island shut down for 24 hours each year, with all travel, noise and most activities banned.
In videos posted online, the tourist claimed he had gone outside despite the restrictions, describing the island as 'peaceful' while strolling through empty streets. He also used explicit language to criticise the rules. Balinese senator Niluh Djelantik confronted him, saying he had disrespected local customs and warning that visitors must follow the rules.
The senator said foreigners who break Nyepi regulations could face serious consequences, including deportation and being banned from returning. It is not yet clear whether the man has been deported. Nyepi is one of the most important days in the Balinese calendar, dedicated to reflection, meditation and spiritual cleansing.
