New research from NoDepositRewards.org has identified Swansea as the UK's most affordable seaside destination, with a daily cost of just £16.71 for essential beach items, while Brighton ranks as the most expensive at £38.20 per day.
How the Research Was Conducted
The UK Seaside Affordability Index analysed costs at popular coastal resorts, including all-day parking fees (based on local council charges), the average price of a '99' ice cream, a large fish and chips meal (from local chippies), and deckchair hire (full-day rate). The study aimed to determine how far £100 would stretch during a seaside excursion.
Brighton: Most Expensive Seaside Destination
Brighton topped the list as the priciest location. All-day parking costs £18, a '99' ice cream is £2.70, fish and chips are £11.50, and deckchair hire is £6 per day, totalling £38.20. According to the research, £100 in Brighton lasts just over two days.
Notably, fish and chips in Brighton are not the most expensive; in Bamburgh, Northumberland, the same meal costs £14.88.
St Ives: Second Most Expensive
St Ives in Cornwall ranked second, with a daily cost of £25.30. Visitors pay roughly £10 for all-day parking, £12.50 for fish and chips, and just over £2.50 for an ice cream.
Swansea: Most Affordable
Swansea emerged as the most economical seaside location. All-day parking costs just £3, an ice cream is £1.65, and the total 'seaside basket' is approximately £16.71 per day, making it the best value destination.
Mason Jones, data expert at NoDepositRewards.org, commented: "Families are budgeting harder than ever for summer 2025. Our Seaside Index shows you can triple the number of beach days simply by choosing a different stretch of coast. With parking now topping local cost charts, the North and Wales clearly win on value."
Implications for Holidaymakers
The research highlights significant cost differences across UK coasts, with parking fees being a major factor. Families seeking affordable days out may benefit from choosing destinations like Swansea over pricier options such as Brighton or St Ives.
