Sunderland Named Best North East Visit Spot, Beating Newcastle

Time Out has named Sunderland as one of the 14 best places to visit in the UK in 2026, ranking it at number 10 and surpassing more popular North East neighbours like Newcastle and Northumberland.

Beaches and Coastal Appeal

Sunderland boasts the twin beaches of Roker and Seaburn, both Blue Flag-listed, offering clean and safe golden sands for families and peaceful walks. A recent TripAdvisor visitor commented: "We spent a fine sunny spring morning walking on the seafront. We got there easily by taking the E1 bus from Sunderland city centre. Roker and Seaburn are attractive with good beaches with nice cafes with good coffee, which we sampled, and seafront restaurants that we would like to try next time."

Pier Point at Roker features cafes and restaurants serving traditional seaside foods and drinks, enhancing the coastal experience.

Museums and Cultural Attractions

Time Out highlighted Sunderland's museums as a key attraction. The National Glass Centre, housed in a striking glass building, offers glassblowing demonstrations and educational experiences. It ranks number two on TripAdvisor for things to do in Sunderland. One visitor said: "This place is amazing. The glassblowing demonstration is really good, the cafe is really nice, food delish, staff very good. Nice setting on the water."

Other notable museums include the North East Land, Sea and Air Museum, Ryhope Engines Museum, and Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, which offers free entry and features Wallace the Lion, a taxidermy lion that has been with the museum for over 160 years. A visitor shared: "The museum offers free entry and has plenty of exhibits. I first had to see the staple of the museum, which is Wallace the Lion who has been with the museum for over 160 years."

Culinary Scene

Time Out specifically recommended Propa Pies, a "nostalgia-fuelled pastry pop-up from Hairy Biker Si King," which sells a variety of unusually flavoured pies alongside classics. The city also hosts a range of independent businesses serving street food, cafes, and seafront favourites.
