Bulgaria's Sozopol: The Amalfi Coast Dupe Offering Riviera Glamour on a Budget

With its quaint wooden houses, cobbled streets, stunning coastline, and bright blue waters, you might easily mistake this picturesque town for the heart of Italy's Amalfi Coast. Yet, this hidden gem is actually one of Bulgaria's oldest coastal towns, offering a lesser-known and far more budget-friendly alternative to its beloved Mediterranean counterpart.

A Tourism Boom in Bulgaria

Bulgaria has experienced a significant tourism surge in recent years, with over 13.6 million foreign visitors recorded in 2025 alone, marking a 2.7 percent increase from 2024. The country's appeal lies in its incredibly low prices compared to other popular European destinations, coupled with equally stunning scenery and pristine beaches. It's no wonder Brits are increasingly choosing Bulgaria for their summer getaways.

Travel experts consistently highlight Bulgaria as an excellent choice for those seeking a budget break without compromising on quality. Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital and engagement at eurochange, explains, "Although Bulgaria has adopted the euro, prices for essentials like food, accommodation, and drinks remain particularly low compared to hotspots like Greece, Spain, and Italy. For instance, you can expect to pay less than €2 (£1.74) for a beer and around €10 (£8.70) for a meal."

Sozopol: The Amalfi Alternative

Sozopol stands out as a top destination dupe, mimicking the riviera glamour of the Amalfi Coast with its restaurants, beaches, and affordable prices. Laura Evans-Fisk notes, "This gorgeous coastal town has a really similar feel to the likes of Positano and Cinque Terre in Italy's famous Riviera. Sozopol's old town is dotted with quaint wooden houses and cobbled streets that overlook the stunning coastline and bright blue waters."

As one of Bulgaria's oldest coastal towns, Sozopol offers a less crowded alternative to nearby resorts like Sunny Beach, making it perfect for a relaxing cultural trip. Visitors can enjoy delicious seafood meals in cliff-edge restaurants, which also serve as ideal spots to catch breathtaking sunsets. Without the crowds typical of Italian getaways, Sozopol provides a calmer, more serene break.

Other Bulgarian Paradise Spots

Bulgaria boasts several other destinations that rival popular European locales. Sinemorets and Veleka Beach, for example, have been compared to Greek islands such as Zakynthos and Kefalonia. Laura elaborates, "Bulgaria's Black Sea coast is becoming increasingly popular, with very similar scenery to the likes of Crete and the Ionian islands. Here, you'll find all the familiar traits of a Mediterranean holiday, including golden sands, turquoise waters, coves, and quiet historic towns to explore."

Sinemorets, a relatively unknown area on Bulgaria's southern coast, features a striking landscape where the Veleka River meets the sea, complete with beautiful dunes and lush greenery. A unique sand strip separates the river from the sea, allowing visitors to choose between fresh or saltwater for a refreshing dip.

For those drawn to the Portuguese Algarve but seeking a more affordable option, Tyulenovo and Varvara are excellent choices. Laura reveals, "These secluded, rocky coastal villages sit on Bulgaria's Black Sea Coast, around 60km north of Varna. The landscape is rugged and dramatic, dotted with beautiful caves similar to those in the Algarve. It's the perfect spot for boat trips, kayaking, and diving."

In July, the fields near Tyulenovo village burst into life with endless blooming sunflowers, offering a spectacular backdrop for sunset photography. With such diverse and cost-effective alternatives, Bulgaria continues to solidify its reputation as a premier budget travel destination in Europe.
