One of Europe's slowest and most memorable train journeys runs between Belgrade, Serbia, and Bar, Montenegro. Taking 11 hours to cover 296 miles, the route offers breathtaking scenery at a bargain price of just €23.
Passengers pass through deep gorges, canyons, and mountain peaks, crossing more than 400 bridges along the way. The Mala Rijeka viaduct is a highlight, along with spectacular dams, ancient monasteries, and stone houses where elderly women in black wave from kitchen windows.
The journey is so captivating that travelers often wish it would go slower. At one point, passengers even got out to feed a herd of goats, and a mountain cowboy on a galloping horse overtook the train. Toward the end, views of swimmers and sunbathers on Adriatic beaches appear.
